Glow favours: what actually lasts the evening
Glow favours: what actually lasts the evening
Glow favours are the cheapest way to change the mood of a room, and they are also the item most often bought without anyone checking how long they last. There are two entirely different products here.
Chemical glow sticks
A standard glow stick contains two separated chemicals. Bending the stick breaks an inner glass vial and the two mix, producing light without heat. Once it starts, it cannot be stopped.
Brightness is highest in the first period and declines gradually. Most party sticks are genuinely bright for a few hours and continue to produce a dimmer glow for considerably longer. The exact figures vary by size and formulation, and where a maker states a duration, the listing repeats it.
Thickness changes everything
A thin bracelet stick holds a small amount of fluid and fades quickly. A thick 8-inch stick holds much more and stays bright far longer. When people report that glow sticks “only lasted an hour”, they usually bought bracelets and expected sticks.
Temperature
The reaction runs faster when warm and slower when cold. A stick in a warm room is brighter and shorter-lived; one taken outside on a cold evening is dimmer but lasts longer. Chilling unused sticks is not a preservation trick — they have not started yet and keep fine at room temperature.
Battery-lit favours
LED glasses, headbands, rings and wands run from small cells. They are brighter, they can be switched off, and they last as long as the battery does, which for a party evening is generally not a limitation.
They are reusable, which changes the value calculation for anyone who runs events regularly. They are also solid objects rather than sealed liquid, which some people prefer around small children.
Which to buy for what
For a large crowd, one item each, handed out as people arrive: chemical sticks, in the thicker sizes, because the cost per person is very low.
For a smaller group, or for something people wear all evening in photographs: battery-lit glasses and headbands, because the brightness holds up.
Mixed packs that include both, plus connectors for making bracelets and necklaces, are the usual answer for a children’s party — the connectors are most of the entertainment.
Connectors and what they turn sticks into
A bag of glow sticks with connectors is a construction toy as much as a favour. Two sticks and a connector make a bracelet; several make a necklace; a handful make glasses or a ball. For a children’s party this occupies a genuine amount of time.
Check that connectors are included rather than assuming — some bulk packs are sticks only.
Timing the handout
Because chemical sticks cannot be switched off, when they are handed out determines when they are useful. Giving them out at the start of a daylight afternoon party wastes most of the brightness before dark.
The practical approach is to hold them until the light drops and hand them out then. It also makes the moment a small event in itself.
Practical checks before ordering
- Match thickness to the duration you need: bracelets are short, 8-inch sticks are long.
- Check whether connectors are included.
- Choose battery-lit items where brightness must hold all evening.
- Check whether batteries are included with LED favours.
- Hold chemical sticks back until the light drops.
